Japanese wood planes, also known as Kanna, are hand planes that have been used in Japan for centuries to shape and smooth wood.

Because of their beauty and efficiency, which comes from their incredibly simple design, they are gaining great popularity in Europe. This puts a tool in the hands of the craftsman that is incredibly functional and simple.

Detailed information

Product detailed description

They consist of a blade, a wooden body and a chip breaker and are used in a pulling rather than pushing motion like the western type planers.

The blades of these planers are replaceable so sharpening is usually not necessary.

One of the key features of Japanese wood planes is the blade, which is made of high-quality steel and is typically very sharp. The blade is also set at a low angle, allowing it to cut wood fibers more cleanly and efficiently than a standard Western-style planer.

Another unique aspect of Japanese wood planers is the wooden body, which is usually made of a dense and stable hardwood such as Japanese white or red oak. The body is designed to be comfortable to hold and easy to manoeuvre, and is often decorated with intricate patterns.

Setting the handcuff on these types of planer is very simple. Adjusting the height of the handcuff can be done by tapping the top edge of the handcuff to increase the chip size of the material being removed or tapping the rear of the planer body to decrease it.

Japanese traditional planers are used by pulling towards each other, with one hand holding onto the front of the planer and pushing it towards the face of the material and the other hand placed behind the handcuff and pulling the planer in the direction of the body.

There are several different types of Japanese wood planes, each with its own specific use. For example, smoothing planes are used to create a smooth and even surface on a piece of wood, while roughing planes are used to remove large amounts of material quickly.
