Linseed oil paint will tarnish over time as linseed oil is broken down by UV light. This will show on the painted parts that are exposed to the sun - on the south side after a few years, on the north side after decades. It also shows up more quickly with dark colours rather than light ones. The paint chalks over time.

The colour confusion is natural and is only an aesthetic defect. The linseed oil that has penetrated the wood still protects it. In addition, the defect can be repaired by painting a thin layer of SELDER lacquer oil, which replaces the lost bonding agent and immediately restores the surface to its original colour and gloss.

Synthetic paints retain their rich hue longer than linseed oil paints because they do not deteriorate with UV light. If you paint with linseed oil paints, expect them to require maintenance with linseed oil to keep them rich.

Advantages of linseed oil paints

• Paints contain a lot of pigment. Cover a large area in one stroke. Despite this, it offers optimal viscosity because the pigment is extremely finely distributed.
• The binder consists of linseed oil, from which the non-drying components have been removed using a unique refining method. It is non-biodegradable and water repellent. It penetrates deep into the substrate and dries by reaction with air oxygen to linoxin, a natural polymer with good adhesion.
• SELDER linseed oil paints penetrate the substrate and breathe. The paint is vapour permeable, but not liquid water, so it doesn't peel.

How to use linseed oil paints

• First, use SELDER shellac to seal the knots and resin pockets in the wood.
• Saturate porous surfaces (e.g. concrete, plaster) with SELDER primer or varnish oil, otherwise the primer will absorb too much binder.
• Impregnate wooden surfaces in exposed areas outdoors with warm SELDER base oil.
• First treat the corroded metal with SELDER corrosion protection oil.

• Other surfaces can be painted with SELDER base linen paint. However, the base paint is not as weather resistant, so apply two more coats of topcoat(semi-matt or semi-gloss paint).
• Only paint dry surfaces (wood with a moisture content of up to 12%) and make sure that not a drop of water gets into the paint, otherwise the paint may peel off.
• Mix the paint in the can from the bottom, cover again and shake.
• Never dilute the paint.
• Apply a covering layer of basic linseed oil paint (70-120 μm). This layer penetrates the wood and protects it against the growth of mould, algae and lichens.
