Ladder - a means of overcoming a difference in height, either up or down. The ladder is based on two vertical uprights connected by horizontal rungs. In use, the ladder must be leaned at an acute angle against a fixed point, creating an inclined plane on which to climb.
Stepladders - are actually two ladders at the top connected by a joint. The advantage of this design is that no fixed support is needed as with a conventional ladder. Thanks to the movable joint, they are easy to fold when carrying.
Previously, stepladders (folding ladders) were only usable on level ground, but today there are many models that can be built on almost any terrain.
Modern multi-purpose ladders combine both designs, so they can be used as extension ladders, extension ladders, can be placed on stairs thanks to telescopic legs. They can also be used as improvised scaffolding.
Wood used to be the most common material for ladders and stepladders, but today they are mostly made of aluminium and its alloys or fibreglass. These materials fully replace the properties of wood, but with a longer service life and significantly lower weight.
Ladders, ladders and stepladders in chemical, electrical or pharmaceutical plants are made of fiberglass because of their non-conductivity and chemical resistance.
